Sassa Grants Will Be Increased Says Ramaphosa

Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Thursday that government will increase social grants to cushion the poor against rising inflation and living costs in his State of the Nation Address (Sona).

The state has a duty to provide a minimum level of protection below which no South African can fall. In our country, more than 25 million people receive some form of income support,’ Ramaphosa said.Millions of South Africans cannot provide for themselves and their families as a result of the rising cost of living, the President said.

According to Ramaphosa, the government will maintain and continue the R350 Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD) to reduce the rising cost of living.

The Percentage of the Government’s Budget Goes to Grants

Around 7.8 million people rely on SRD grants and approximately 60% of the government’s budget goes to providing basic services and assistance to households and individuals to combat poverty and hunger. In spite of fiscal constraints, Ramaphosa affirmed that work was underway to develop a permanent mechanism for targeted basic income support.

National Treasury is also considering “urgent measures” to protect the most vulnerable from soaring food prices caused by load shedding.

As part of this effort, the President said, we will link the data across government to make sure we reach everyone who needs help.He also pointed out that around two million indigent households receive free water, electricity, and solid waste removal.
