SASSA Unclaimed Grants - What You Need to Know

SASSA Unclaimed Grants – What You Need to Know. If you’re a recipient of a social grant from SASSA, it’s crucial to stay updated on the latest grant collection dates. But what happens if you don’t collect your grant? Here’s a breakdown of the key information you need to know.

Grant Expiration: Can Your SASSA Grant Expire?

According to the South African Government’s website, social grants do have an expiration date. Specifically, a social grant lapses when beneficiaries fail to claim it for three consecutive months. In such cases, the grant will expire, and recipients will need to reapply for it. SASSA typically informs beneficiaries through letters or SMS before the grant’s expiration date.

How to Reapply or Appeal

If your social grant has lapsed or expired, don’t worry; SASSA provides an opportunity to reapply for previous social grants within 90 days after the grant has expired. If your reapplication gets approved, grants will be paid as usual from the date of reacceptance. However, if you miss this 90-day deadline, you’ll have to follow the regular procedure and apply for your respective social grant from scratch. Applications must be submitted in writing, and the easiest way to do this is by visiting your nearest office with the required documents.

How SASSA Can Assist

SASSA offers multiple options for grant recipients to collect their payments. You can choose to collect your grant at selected retailers or regional offices. Additionally, if you prefer to have payments made directly into your bank account, you can apply for this option. If you have any questions or need to update your SASSA details, it’s advisable to contact the main call center or visit your nearest SA Social Security Agency office for assistance.
