Social grants are essential to the livelihood of South Africans without any alternative source of income. South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) administers these grants, which include:

It is crucial that you meet the eligibility requirements of your preferred social grant before applying. This is primarily due to the fact that these grants are specifically intended for low-income individuals. You will be subject to a means test by Sassa to ensure this is the case.

You will also have to submit supporting documents with your grant application, depending on the grant you are applying for. The Foster Child Grant, however, is paid out when a court order is issued.

If you qualify and submit your application, or if your application is rejected, you may appeal, you will need to constantly monitor your feedback from Sassa as follows:

You can track the progress of your grant appeal or overall status.

The Social Relief of Distress grant is also provided by Sassa to qualifying individuals. Unlike permanent implementations, it was not permanent. Sassa will send you an SMS to let you know the status of your application and/or appeal. Due to this, it is important to confirm that the phone number you provided is correct.

What To Do If Your Sassa Grant Application Is Denied

There is a possibility that your grant application could be rejected, although this may not always be the case. The rejection will be accompanied by written reasons from Sassa. If this occurs, Sassa will allow you to appeal, but this must be done within 90 days of receiving feedback.
