Who Can Use SASSA

SASSA, managed by the Department of Social Development in South Africa, provides monthly grants to individuals falling into the following categories: Older persons (aged 60 and above), persons with disabilities, and war veterans.

Eligibility and Criteria for SASSA Grant

If you want to apply for an SRD R350 grant in 2024, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be a South African citizen, a recognized refugee, or an asylum seeker with valid documentation.
  • The applicant must reside in South Africa.

  • Earnings should not exceed R624 per month.

Starting from April 2022, you may appeal any rejection of your application by visiting the DSD (Department of Social Development) appeals website. Appeals are handled by ITSAA (Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals) and must be filed within 90 days of rejection:

  • To lodge an appeal or check the appeal status, click the button “click here ”.
  • You will need to enter your 13-digit African ID card number and your registered phone number in order to request a PIN.
  • You will receive a PIN via SMS. You will need to enter this PIN on the website.
  • Choose the month of your rejected grant. For each rejected SRD grant month, file a separate appeal.
  • Provide all necessary documents (e.g., last six months’ bank statements, proof of residence, ID).
  • Give a concise explanation of why you are appealing.
  • After attaching the documents and explaining why you are appealing, submit the form.

After you submit your appeal, the independent tribunal will review it and render a decision within 60 to 90 days. If ITSAA accepts your appeal, you will receive the SRD grant payments, otherwise, you will be notified if your appeal is denied.

SASSA Reconsideration Status Check

Reconsideration for May 2020 to March 2022 has ended, and no additional applications will be considered. If you would like to check the status of your reconsideration appeal, please follow the steps below:

How To Get Sassa Grant Sent To Your Bank Account?

Receiving payments via your bank account is probably the most convenient payment method and fastest way to receive the grant, it also means you can avoid queuing in person at the Post Office.

The amounts for each month will be paid into the bank account of the beneficiary as per the grant application. Please note that the bank details or cellular phone number provided for payment MUST be registered in the name of the approved applicant used in the COVID-19 R350 grant application process to make sure that payment goes to the correct recipients.

How to Change SRD R350 Grant Banking Details?

The SASSA SRD R350 banking details can only be changed by permanent SASSA grant recipients. There is a slightly different process for South African citizens and Asylum Seekers/Special Permit holders.

Process for South African ID Card Holders

If you are a holder of a South African ID Card, you must follow the following steps:

  • The SASSA cannot deposit grants into another’s bank account.

How Do I Cancel My COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant Application?

If your financial situation improves enough for you to no longer need COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress Grants, you may cancel them. The following steps should be followed:

  • Select “Send Pin” to receive an OTP.
  • To verify your identity, enter the OTP.

SASSA grants can be considered fraud and may result in criminal charges, fines, and even the ineligibility of receiving future government grants.

How to Reinstate Your Cancelled SASSA Grant?

Your SRD grant can be reinstated if you previously canceled it due to improved financial circumstances, but you are now facing financial difficulties again:

  • Go to the SASSA Web Portal at

  • Then click on “Send pin” and verify the OTP.

The following reasons can be used to reinstate a grant:

SASSA may take up to 14 days to review your reinstatement request. You will receive a notification once it has been reviewed and approved.

Collecting SASSA SRD Payments for April 2024

SASSA releases its payment schedules each month at the end of the previous month. The April 2024 payment dates are now available. You can only collect your SRD grant payment after the status check and after receiving an SMS notification confirming your payment each month.

There are three ways to collect your money:

Collect via Your Bank Account

In the case that you selected a bank account as a payment method and provided your bank details with your SASSA application, the grant money will be deposited directly into your bank account. The money can be withdrawn from any ATM or from the bank branch.

Collect Via SASSA Card

SASSA Cards can be used at ATMs or SASSA-selected stores that offer free withdrawals.

Using a Cash Payment Method

You will have to collect your grant money in cash from the local Post Office branches (SAPOs/Post Banks) or SASSA-partnered retail outlets if you did not provide bank information.

The Social Relief of Distress Grant

A Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD Grant) is administered in accordance with Appendix 32 of the Social Assistance Act, 2004 (Act No. 13 of 2004), and is implemented with the concurrence of the Finance Minister.

The Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD Grant) is intended for South African Citizens, Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders who are between the ages of 18 and 60 years old, who have insufficient means, do not receive social grants on behalf of themselves/him, do not contribute to or qualify for UIF payments, and do not receive any other financial assistance.

Results Of Social Relief Of Distress Grant Of R350 Application Status

Application Complete 

Your SRD Sassa grant will be awarded to you every month after your application has been verified after reapplication.

Bank Details Pending

Reapplication Pending

As a result of the COVID-19 disaster, Sassa continues to offer the Sassa R350 grant to their unemployed citizens. Period (e.g. November ) Pending

The Sassa official has received the applicant’s reapplication, but the verification process has not yet been completed. Applicants can check back in later in the month to check the latest status.

Period (e.g.November ) Approved

The grant application for your application has been approved, but only for the period specified. In order to confirm when the grant money will be paid, the client can check the pay date field. Sassa has not yet processed any payment for you if there was no pay date listed there.

Period (e.g. November ) Declined

Sassa grants for the mentioned period have been declined. You were also informed of the specific reason why your Sassa application was declined by a Sassa official. As per Sassa, applicants whose grant applications have been declined can appeal or request reconsideration within 30 days of receiving the denial notice.

What is SASSA SRD Grant?

What is My SASSA Status Pending? 

Unfortunately, for a lot of people, when they check Sassa status online it is only showing as “pending” and they are unable to receive the R350. The official SASSA recently released the below message on 1st June 2024. Payments for the new cycle of the special COVID-19 SRD grant (from April 2024) will be paid as of mid-June 2024.

SASSA will continue clearing outstanding payments from the previous cycle as and when the bank details are confirmed. The payments will not be done together but will be done month by month. More than one payment may be made in a month, but no one will receive double payments in amount. SASSA will do these multiple payments in a month until the backlog is finalized, where after monthly payments will resume.

How Do I Have My R350 Grant Reconsidered?

When Does the SASSA R350 Grant End?

President Cyril Ramaphosa has stated that the Covid-19 R350 government grant and payment of grants will be extended for the next 12 months till March 2024. This was announced during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Cape Town on February 10. It is hoped the Relief of Distress Grant will continue to help those people that need it most in South Africa. The grant should be seen as a temporary grant and an opportunity to help those find new career options.

SRD status checks will return one of the following results. Below I will explain each result and the steps to follow:

  • Application Complete: You have completed the application or reapplication process for the SRD R350 grant. Each month, it will be verified before approval. It does not guarantee that you will receive grant payments, but it shows you are on your way to doing so.
  • Application Approved Status: Your SASSA grant application has been approved when you see “Approved Status.”. Once the grant is approved, you’ll receive the funds. The approval will be notified to you via SMS, email, or letter. After that, you can choose how you want to receive the money: through your bank account, Post Office account, or cash card.
  • Declined Application Status: When your SASSA status is Declined, it means you did not meet the eligibility criteria and SASSA has rejected your application. SASSA will also provide you with the reason for rejection.
  • Application Status Pending: SASSA status pending means SASSA has received your application but needs more time to review it and verify your details before approving it. Upon completion of verifications, your grant status will be updated and you will be notified.
  • Identity Verification Failed: You were unable to verify your identity due to a problem. We were unable to match your information with the records of the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).
  • Bank Details Pending: Despite SASSA receiving your application/reapplication, you did not provide banking details or have not selected a preferred payment method. SASSA requires you to select your preferred method (Cash Send or Bank) or enter your banking information.
  • Reapplication Pending Status: Your SASSA R350 grant application has not been resubmitted. Apply through the SRD website. The SASSA R350 grant was initially introduced to assist COVID-19, but later SASSA extended it to help their needy citizens. Unemployed and needy citizens must reapply for the grant.
  • Period Pending Status: There is always a period pending for a specific month, for example “period December pending”. It means that your reapplication verification for that month is pending. You should check your status regularly this month until the payment date.
  • Period Approved Status: There is always a period approved for a specific month, e.g. “period approved for January”. It means that your application is valid for that month. You should look for the “payday” field to see your payment date. If the field is empty, the payment has not been processed yet.
  • Period Declined Status: It shows the period declined for a specific month, e.g. “period October fell “. SASSA has declined your application with a valid reason for that particular month. The website allows you to submit a reconsideration request if you believe the reason is invalid and you are eligible for the grant.
