DA wants to increase the SRD child grant by 30%

The Department of Social Development (DSD) is calling for an increase in the child support grant from R480 to R624 a month, in order to match the food poverty line and provide better protection against hunger, malnutrition and stunting for the poorest children in South Africa.
DA wants to increase the SRD child grant by 30%
The DSD’s findings are supported by the March 2023 Household Affordability Index, which revealed that the current grant of R480 is 28% below the food poverty line. This means that children living in poverty are not receiving the necessary support to protect them against hunger and malnutrition.
The DSD believes that the child support grant must be increased in order to protect the poorest children from hunger, malnutrition and stunting. This increase would also bring the grant in line with the food poverty line, ensuring that the grant is sufficient to provide for the basic needs of these children.
Increasing the child support grant from R480 to R624 a month could provide a lifeline for children living in poverty, allowing them to access the basic necessities of life, such as food and shelter. It is, therefore, essential that the child support grant is increased in order to protect the poorest children from hunger, malnutrition and stunting.
