How Do SRD Grant Payments Work Under The New Rules?

Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants are still being paid out by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa). Sassa recently reintroduced the R350 grant with some new rules for beneficiaries.

New rules govern both the amount and payment period of the SRD grant

The rules are as listed as follows

  • For the months of 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023, the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress monthly payment is R350 per person.
  • Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress grants may not be paid for more than three consecutive months without confirmation that the recipient continues to meet eligibility requirements, and may be extended up to three months.
  • In accordance with these regulations, payments are made. A) are limited to the amount authorized for social relief of distress by the Social Development Department for fiscal year 2022/2023, and B) can only be made in relation to applications accepted by the Agency between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023.
  • If funds are available, payments may be made for applications and appeals filed within the periods set out in these regulations at a later date.

A SMS notification will inform beneficiaries when their grants are ready for collection.
