SASSA is looking for ways to introduce more payment channels for its beneficiaries, including onboarding spaza shops. According to Sassa, they were working with two spaza shop groups, and they had to meet certain requirements to ensure that they had legal South Africans who could take part in the spaza shop initiative so that compliance with the financial system requirements would not be a problem.

According to the Agency, the main goal of partnering with spaza shops is to make it easier for recipients of social grants to receive payments locally. In this way, grant payments would not have to be collected far from beneficiaries’ homes.

In order to reduce costs for both Postbank and Sassa, Sassa beneficiaries have been encouraged to use their Sassa cards for purchases. Additionally, beneficiaries carrying large amounts of cash are less likely to be robbed when using the Sassa card.

Alternative payment channels such as retailers, bank ATMs, and mobile cash payment points are available where there are no Post Offices.

Beneficiaries can take advantage of the following pay points on the day their grants are available:

  • ATMs
  • Pick n Pay
  • Shoprite
  • U-Save
  • Checkers
  • Boxer

At pay points, they can withdraw cash or buy essentials with their Sassa cards. Sassa reminds beneficiaries that the grant money remains on the card until they decide to use it, so they do not need to withdraw it on the day it becomes available.
